Stories to tell
If, when you visit a place, what you enjoy most is soaking up its history, its culture and its essence, we suggest this tour that combines all of that with indoor and outdoor spaces.
Itinerary
1. Mogor Petroglyphs
Start your day at the petroglyphs of Mogor, the area furthest away from the centre of this route and one of the greatest references in rock art in the Rías Baixas. Its privileged location overlooking the sea, its fine condition and its three series of engravings (Pedra do Laberinto, Pedra dos Campiños and Laxe dos Mouros), make this corner a unique place.

The well-known Labyrinth of Mogor is one of the best known and most studied petroglyphs in Galicia, an artistic expression full of mysticism and mystery, since there are many theories about what it really represents. Like this one, similar ones have appeared in Lapland, Finland, Iceland and Cornwall, which leads us to think that it may be “the hallmark” of an itinerant people or civilization. Come to the Interpretation Centre and don’t miss anything about this magical corner of Marín!
As an extra tip, if you come in the summer season, you can leave this stop for the end and enjoy one of the guided night tours that will give you another perspective.

2. Castro da Subidá (fortified settlement)
Continue your route by going to the Castro de Subidá, a Romanized fortified settlement dating from between the first and fourth centuries A.D. covering an area of about 30,000 m2.

Its name, from the Latin “civitatem,” referring to “city”, gives clues to what it was in the past. In it, you can see different circular houses, defensive formations, a small acropolis with an oval floor plan and two promontories. Enjoy breathing in the history of Marín with the sea in the background.

3. Chapel of Sete Espadas
Very close to the fortified settlement, you can visit the Capela das Sete Espadas, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.

What stands out the most in this simple ensemble, dated between 1773 and 1775, is its “cruceiro” (stone cross), which served as inspiration for Castelao to paint an oil on canvas entitled A casa do cruceiro. This curious cross features a modern shaft and capital and a Gothic cross. Of course, as in this whole area, don’t forget to enjoy the views.

4-5. Marín Old Town and Manuel Torres Museum
Back in the centre of Marín, we recommend you visit the Manuel Torres Museum, dedicated to this painter born in Marín in 1901 who worked with a range of pictorial disciplines (landscapes, still lifes, portraits and engravings).

In this museum, you can see the painter’s work, in which his cartoons and drawings for newspapers stands out; part of his work is clearly inspired by the Castelao’s satyr.
In addition to his work, the museum has rooms featuring temporary exhibitions by different plastic artists and artisans.
To end the day, while the sun hides among the cobbled streets, we recommend that you stroll through the streets of the historic centre of Marín and marvel at the houses of fishermen and corsairs; above all, look out for the manor house belonging to the “Irmáns Fontenla.”
