Discover Marín
MARÍN AT FULL LIFE
Discover the heart of the Morrazo region
Marín is the gateway to the Morrazo Peninsula, an enclave of great fishing, commercial and military importance that is nourished by the estuary and the rich countryside. With the contrast between the sea and the mountains, we bring visitors a duality that makes you fall in love. The “castrexos” (Iron Age settlers) and the Romans used to inhabit here. However, it was not until the twelfth century, thanks to the monks of Oseira, that our town arose as San Xiao de Ancorados, a priory that administered the local fisheries.
It was then referred to as the Town and Port of Marín, made up of the parishes of Santa María do Porto, Seixo, Mogor, Ardán, O Campo, Santomé de Piñeiro and San Xulián. With 24,154 inhabitants (INE 2024), we are just a few kilometres from the city of Pontevedra, in the heart of the famous Rías Baixas region. Our warm white sandy beaches and turquoise colour make us the perfect destination for sea lovers, a privileged setting in our particular “Galifornia.” Do you want to discover us?
ESSENTIALS
You can't miss
If you want to experience the essence of Marín, these are the tourist attractions that cannot be missed on your adventure. Write them down on your trip!
Old Town
Immerse yourself in the seafaring life of the town by touring its streets, fishermen’s and corsairs’ houses, visiting the Sea Museum, mingling with those selling their produce at the “Plaza de Abastos” (Food Market), cooling off in the Paseo Alcalde Blanco avenue or going to the large port.
Islet and beaches of O Santo and A Coviña
We have a lot of sea in Marín, and sometimes it is difficult for us to choose which beach to go to. But, if you ask us, we will say that one of our favourites is that of O Santo: its calm waters, fine sand and an islet with a lot of history and vestiges to discover.
Castiñeiras Lake
This haven of peace features one of the oldest forests in Galicia, and an ideal recreational area to visit with the family. You will appreciate the tranquillity in the air, a place guarded by birds and horses in freedom where you can start your next route.
Marín’s megalithism
The Mámoa do Rei burial mound, near Lake Castiñeiras, or the petroglyphs of Mogor, are the greatest expression of our town’s first monumental architecture dating back 4,500 years. Take a trip back in time exploring the secrets of Marín’s rock art!
Hiking in the heights
The best way to enjoy ourselves is on foot. Our landscape features many nuances with several routes that you can do. One of them, the most spectacular, is the Route of the Five Viewpoints, our private balcony overlooking the estuary with heart-stopping views.
“Festa Corsaria” (Pirate Festival)
Reminiscing about history allows us to get to know each other better, and the “Festa Corsaria” is, without a doubt, a great day to remember that in 1800 Marín defeated the English troops in the Battle of Aguete. Relive that time among concerts, pirates, workshops, exhibitions and markets!
