Castiñeiras Lake

Lake Castiñeiras, located on Monte de Cotorredondo, is one of the most emblematic green spaces in Marín. Surrounded by a natural setting featuring trails and wooded areas, it is ideal for walking, relaxing and enjoying a day with the family.

This park was the dream come true of the politician Daniel de la Sota and the forestry engineer Rafael Areses between 1927 and 1958. In the first phase, they focused on the reforestation work that was practically the first of its kind in Spain and promoted the growth of pine forests and other native species, being an example of a balanced, sustainable and respectful forest management plan. In a second phase, around the 1950s, this artificial lake and its access roads were created.

The entire park that surrounds it, which you can explore on foot or by bike, is home to a wide range of forest species. In addition, the variety of its fauna and flora is one of the area’s great attractions, making it a varied and sustainable ecosystem.

There are also important archaeological sites In the vicinity of the lake , such as the imposing “Mámoa do Rei,” one of the largest dolmens in Galicia and one that you can visit.

Today, Lake Castiñeiras and the entire Cotorredondo Park is a popular place for lovers of nature, sports (especially mountain biking or hiking) and archaeological heritage. It also houses the facilities in which the Juan XXIII Foundation imparts a vocational training course in Gardening and Nursery, being an example of socio-professional inclusion of people in situations of psychosocial vulnerability.

The park features large recreational areas with tables, benches, fountains and toilets. It also stands out as one of the few approved barbecue sites in Galicia, where it is possible to cook all year round, making it a perfect place for outdoor meals.

This lake is, therefore, a space that combines nature, leisure and heritage where you can unwind without leaving the municipal district.
