10 perfect plans to enjoy autumn in Marín

Located in the heart of the Rías Baixas, Marín is a wonderful destination to enjoy nature, history and the best Galician cuisine. And there is no doubt that autumn is one of the best times to visit it, when the calm of the landscape and the golden colour of its forests fill the area with enchantment.

Can you imagine walking among ancient petroglyphs while listening to the sound of the sea? Or enjoy a picnic surrounded by oaks and ferns? Marín has it all, and in autumn, without so many tourists, it is even more enjoyable.

The best plans to enjoy autumn in Marín

In autumn, the beaches are empty and the forests are filled with colour. In addition, it is the perfect time to enjoy the local cuisine: spider crabs, swim crabs, mussels, octopus and delicious wines. Do you want to know how to make the most of this time of year?

The best family excursions

Marín is one of the most complete family destinations in the Rías Baixas. Its parks, recreational areas and hiking trails are ideal for the whole family.

  • Visit La Granja de Briz (Park of the Senses): a space covering more than 24,000 m² with slides, wooden sculptures, climbing areas, ponds and picnic areas. The little ones will be able to touch, smell and discover nature while having a great time.
  • Walk along Lake Castiñeiras: a natural enclave shared with Vilaboa, full of ducks, swans and trout. It features many short trails, picnic areas and a wildlife recovery centre.
  • Explore La Granja de la Costa, an estate that used to belong to the monks of Oseira, to learn more about local history while the kids enjoy the outdoors.
  • Participate in the “andainas”: guided walks along different routes in Marín, designed for all ages.

Tip: Wear comfortable clothes and something warm. In autumn, the weather can change in a matter of minutes.

Best Places to Take Photos

Marín is a paradise for photography lovers. The contrast between the green of the mountains, the blue of the sea and the autumn tones creates unique landscapes. The most photogenic places with the best views are:

  • Route of the Five Viewpoints: a circular route of about 10 km that features spectacular views overlooking the estuary of Pontevedra. With stops at points such as Mirador da Moreira, Mirador de O Cruceiro do Vento and Mirador de A Subidá.
  • Mogor Petroglyphs: three rocks engraved with thousand-year-old labyrinthine figures, known as Pedra dos Mouros, Pedra dos Campiños and Pedra do Labirinto. The best time to take photos is just before sunset, when the sun’s rays fall laterally on the petroglyphs, highlighting the engravings and creating an almost magical scene.
  • Monte da Penizas: a perfect place to capture beautiful panoramic views of the estuary and the island of Tambo.
  • A Coviña Beach and its swing in front of the sea: one of the most “instagrammable” corners of the entire region.

Hiking trails (of different levels)

In autumn, the trails of Marín are filled with magic. There are routes for all levels, from short walks to more demanding hikes with spectacular views.

  • Route of the Five Viewpoints (10 km – low difficulty): connects the main viewpoints of Marín and passes through beaches, forests and rock art areas. Ideal to do with the family.
  • Ruta do Monte Penizas (6 km – medium difficulty): ascend to one of the best panoramic points on the estuary. Includes stops in Santa Maria do Campo and Santo Tomé de Piñeiro.
  • Castiñeiras Lake Route (2 km – low difficulty): a circular walk around the lagoon, surrounded by oaks and pines, with picnic areas and recreational areas.
  • Path of the Loira Waterwheels (3 km – low difficulty): along the course of the Loire River, discovering restored old waterwheels and charming rural landscapes.
  • Castro de A Subidá Route (3.5 km – medium difficulty): in addition to enjoying the views, it will allow you to get to know one of the best preserved fortified settlements in the region.

Picnic areas to enjoy nature

Autumn invites you to enjoy meals outdoors, with the murmur of the forest in the background. In Marín, you will find a wide range of picnic areas ideal for enjoying the landscape.

  • Castiñeiras Lake Recreational Area: with stone tables, barbecues and fountains, surrounded by hundred-year-old trees. A place that is often visited by families but is usually very quiet in autumn.
  • Granja de Briz picnic area: ideal to go with children. Tables are located next to play areas and wooden sculptures.
  • Monte de A Subidá: several rest areas with views of the estuary and the island of Tambo.
  • Aguete area: located next to the beach, with benches and tables to enjoy the sound of the sea while eating.
  • Loira area: a little-known corner, with abundant shade and easy access by car.

The beaches of Marín

Marín was the first Galician municipality to achieve EMAS certification for environmental management for all its beaches. And, although many think that they can only be enjoyed in summer, during autumn they have a different beauty, offering calm, fresh air and a more authentic landscape to enjoy walks by the sea.

  • Mogor Beach: famous for its white sand and petroglyphs located a few metres away. Without a doubt, one of the most emblematic places in Marín.
  • Portocelo: spacious, easily accessible and very close to the town centre. Ideal for enjoying a walk at sunset.
  • Loira: a quiet family beach, surrounded by pine trees, with crystal-clear waters.
  • Aguete: one of the largest in Marín, with a blue flag and spectacular views of the estuary.
  • A Coviña: perfect for those looking for privacy. In addition, when the tide is low, you can walk to San Clemente Island.
  • Santo do Mar: small and charming, with a chapel that seems to be suspended over the sea.

And also… A journey to the past featuring rock art and legends

If there is one thing that differentiates Marín from the rest of the Rías Baixas, it is its archaeological heritage. An authentic journey to the origins of Galicia.

  • Mogor Petroglyphs: an impressive series of stones engraved with labyrinthine symbols and concentric circles, considered one of the most important ensembles of European rock art.
  • Mogor Interpretation Centre: it explains the meaning and symbology of the engravings. In high season, it offers guided tours, both day and night.
  • Castro de A Subidá: the remains of a Celtic settlement overlooking the estuary, where circular houses and defensive walls can still be seen.
  • Manuel Torres Museum: in the centre of Marín, it houses exhibitions on the local historical and artistic heritage.

Therefore, Marín is an ideal destination to enjoy in autumn. A fantastic season to rediscover its nature, its history and its people without haste, with that leisurely pace so typical of Galicia.

Therefore, if this autumn you are looking for a place where you can breathe fresh air, eat well and return home with a heart full of memories, Marín is the perfect place. We’re sure that once you discover it, you’ll want to come back every year.
